Exploring IU's Campus Collections

From rare manuscripts and maps to ancient ceramics and modern textiles, Indiana University stewards an eclectic array of materials related to Korean history and culture. Curators from libraries, archives, and museums across campus have assembled special physical and digital exhibitions for Korea Remixed to highlight the best of IU’s collections.

Digital Exhibitions

IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

IUMAA presents a digital photographic exhibition exploring the significance of hanbok, or traditional women’s clothing, in Korean culture and the ways in which ideas of modesty influenced by Confucianism shaped these fashions in the twentieth century.

Archives of Traditional Music

Featuring recordings dating back as far as 1896, the Archives of Traditional Music’s Korea Remixed digital exhibition traces the history and evolution of some of Korea’s most iconic musical traditions such as pansori and sanjo.

Kinsey Institute

The Kinsey Institute presents two archival items as part of the Korea Remixed digital exhibitions—a twenty-first century photograph and a twentieth century magazine article, each of which explores aspects of sexuality and gender roles in Korean society.

Physical Exhibitions

Eskenazi Museum

The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art has a small but choice selection of Korean ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings, which range in date from the seventh to the twenty-first century. See the current installation on the second floor of the museum.

IU Libraries

Throughout the spring semester, Wells Library will host two archival exhibitions. A display on the first floor will highlight contemporary work by Korean-American authors, and a display on the eighth floor will feature various materials from IU’s Korean Studies collection.

University Archives

Presented in Wells Library, University Archives’ Korea Remixed exhibition highlights the early history of Korean students on the Bloomington campus beginning in the 1920s and continuing through the post-war era in the 1950s.
