This photo is part of the artist’s photo-documentary project “What Pretty Condoms.” The project looks at the marketing and design of male and female condoms in over twenty cities around the world. This photograph represents Seoul, South Korea. The photograph depicts a vending machine feature two Korean condom boxes: Zzimong and Zzmong-Nano Slimy.

Mysteries of a Korean Wedding Night

This article is a telling of the author’s experience in observing and learning the customs of a young Korean couple’s wedding in the early 1950s. The bride to be lives with her future husband and mother-in-law a few weeks before the wedding to learn his preferences. She is to make baby clothes in preparation of her obligation to the marriage, pregnancy, and the birth of a child. The ceremonial wedding takes place. Guests stay late into the night. The groom finally has time to spend with his bride before being interrogated by his friends the next morning regarding the details of the wedding night.
