In early 2016, a team of IU alumni began production for a feature-length romantic comedy entitled "The Good Catholic," which was filmed in downtown Bloomington and near the surrounding IU campus. IU Bloomington Media School senior Brielle Drelick, a journalism major, worked on marketing and publicity for the film, putting local media in touch with the producers and cast, and using social media to promote the film.
In October of 2015, IU Opera Theater at the Jacobs School of Music performed Jake Heggie's “Dead Man Walking,” an opera exploring the social and spiritual implications of the death penalty. Programming was presented on campus in conjunction with the opera, highlighted by a visit from Sister Helen Prejean, author of the 1993 nonfiction book that inspired the opera.
Jacobs School of Music sophomore Gabe Young, an oboist, was named the winner of the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute’s concerto competition in July 2015. As the winner, Young was invited to perform the Marcello Oboe Concerto with the Summer Music Institute’s Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
